About the show
“Heart of a Dog”
A play of questions without answers
One of the rare masterpieces of the Soviet era that has transcended its time and become a timeless classic.
What and How?
Heart of a Dog is a story that each generation re-reads anew. Today, Bulgakov’s narrative takes on renewed significance: once again, a generation of Russian intellectuals—modern-day “Professor Preobrazhenskys”—has lost its country, ceding control to a new wave of “Sharikovs” and “Shvonders.” This signals the need for a theatrical reinterpretation of Bulgakov’s text.
The production explores the reasons why the events of the early 20th century are repeating themselves, using the language of contemporary media, modern theatrical techniques, and video design—tools that shape this play of questions without answers.
WHO AND FOR WHOM?
The production is created by an international team that includes a British director and a French stage designer, featuring well-known Russian actors now living in various countries. It is designed for a global Russian-speaking audience.
This story of 1920s Moscow now travels beyond the borders of the country in which it was written, following the path of the modern-day Bulgakov audience dispersed across the world.
